Shunning the diesel roots of the original Fabia vRS (above), the new car will use the same twincharged 1.4-litre engine that has seen service in the latest Seat Ibiza Cupra . With it’s supercharger and turbocharger this little engine is capable of 178bhp, and with that sort of power under the bonnet the new Fabia vRS should be capable of 0-60mph in around 7 seconds and a top speed of about 140mph.

The Fabia vRS will get much bolder styling this time round and will be easily distinguished from the lesser models in the range. This wasn’t the case with the old vRS which had conservative styling that masked it’s performance potential, although for a lot of owners that was part of its appeal.

Other hand-me-downs from the Volkswagen parts bin will include a seven-speed DSG gearbox, complete with wheel-mounted shift paddles.

The Fabia vRS will be unveiled in early 2010, with deliveries set to start later in the year at a price of around £16,000.
