Soon there’ll be no escape from speed cameras. We’ve already got the dreaded SPECS cameras measuring our average speed, and now there’s a new ‘intelligent’ speed camera that could be rolled out onto the UK’s roads within the next 18 months.

Gatso Speed Camera

A greater threat to our licenses than the common Gatso, these new cameras don’t flash, they can cover multiple lanes at once and they can distinguish between lorries and cars and will know the different limits for each type of vehicle.

The new cameras are going to be trialled in France and will be difficult to spot as they will be styled to blend in with signposts. Hopefully when they come over here the cameras will stick to the ‘rules of engagement’ and will be painted yellow, to give us a fair chance.

Oh, and if you like to use the motorway hard shoulder as your own private lane then you should watch out, as the Highways Agency has revealed that it plans to spend £58 million on new digital cameras to catch and fine drivers using the hard shoulder.

If you haven’t already got one, perhaps now is the time to invest in a GPS speed camera detector.
