Now’s a great time to buy a new car. If you’re in the fortunate position to be browsing though the company car list or you’re thinking of heading down to your dealer for a shiny new motor, the chances are you’re going to be buying a car packed with a huge amount of new technology.

It’s quite exciting seeing how technology is transforming the way we use our cars but there’s so much new tech around that it’s easy to lose track. This is something that Ford are keen to help with as they launch their new Primary Brand campaign. It’s an attempt to show us the gadgets and gizmos that we can have in their cars and they start off by asking a simple question – what do you want your car to do?

Well, apart from the obvious ‘run on fresh air’ there are some more realistic options that Ford offer, most of which have only been available in their range for the last year or so. One of the most impressive is the Active Park Assist, a system which takes the stress and bumper-scraping out of parallel parking. Now you might not think you need it but as the video below shows the more people who have this sort of tech at their fingertips, the better it is for all of us (and our cars)!

It’s not just clever gadgets like the Park Assist. Their tiny 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine is another great use of the latest technology but this time it’s designed to save you money on fuel. This little engine has the power of a 1.6-litre but returns much better economy and costs less to tax. You might think that such a small engine in a big car is a bad idea but when I drove an Ecoboost-powered Focus it was an eye-opening experience.

I’ve also sampled Ford’s Torque Vectoring Control on the new Fiesta and Focus ST. It’s a great way of allowing these feisty hot hatches to lay down their power without shredding wheels or catapulting you into the nearest ditch. That way we get to enjoy even more performance!

If you want to learn more about how technology is transforming cars then go visit the new Go Further website. There you’ll find videos and pictures showing just what’s on offer with explanations of how they work and what they offer. The Ford Primary Brand campaign is a great idea and, while it’s obviously designed to make their own cars look good and try to convince you to buy one, it’s also a highlight of how far our cars have come in the last few years.

Think back to the start of the century and most of this technology was either unavailable or was the preserve of luxury cars. A Focus that could park itself was little more than fantasy. It’s going to be fascinating to see what our cars will be doing in another 10 years time.
