A tired old 1979 Volkswagen Golf 1.5 automatic that was bought for just £50 is now claimed to be faster than a Bugatti Veyron.

Bought by Andy Waite, 42, the Golf has been transformed into a monster with a custom-built 700bhp turbocharged 1,850cc engine. With a 0-60mph time of just 2.36 seconds the little Golf is a tenth quicker than the £1million Bugatti Veyron, and it will even manage to beat the Veyron up to the 1/4 mile mark before maxing out at a top speed of 180mph.

Andy is currently leading the Euro Sports Compact drag racing championship, held at Santa Pod in Northamptonshire. The competition is driving development of the car, which is still a work-in-progress. “The tinkering’s only just begun. I want to do a quarter mile in nine seconds,” said Andy.

“It drives like a normal road car at low speeds but when I put it on the drag track you realise you have created a monster. The biggest problem is that once you get over 160 you can only drive it in a straight line because the steering goes wobbly.”
