Say ‘hello’ to the Volkswagen Golf R – the fastest accelerating Golf to make it into mass production.
Powered by a 267bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre TSI engine and using an all-wheel drive system, the Golf R is capable of reaching 62mph in just 5.7 seconds with a manual transmission, while the 6-speed DSG transmission reduces that to just 5.5 seconds. Maximum power is available at 6,000rpm while the peak torque of 255lb.ft is available from 2,500rpm through to 5,000rpm.
According to VW the upgraded 4Motion AWD system can send 100% of the torque to the rear wheels in extreme circumstances, so the Golf R should prove to be a more entertaining handler than the old R32.
As far as looks are concerned the Golf R takes a typically understated approach, unlike the rival Focus RS, but the visual clues are there. At the front you’ll find an ‘R’ logo on the grille, and a new bumper features larger air intakes with glossy louvres. From the side you can see the sill extensions and new 18-inch ‘Talladega’ alloys wrapped in 225/40 tyres, with a 19-inch upgrade available on the options list. Finally, at the rear are a new bumper sitting on top of a pair of centrally mounted exhaust pipes, with a rear spoiler adding the finishing touch.
Other noteworthy features include LED daytime running lights built into the front bumper with bi-xenon headlights for maximum night-time vision, and at the rear you’ll find LED tail lights. On the inside there are sports seats, a 3-spoke leather steering wheel and a scattering of ‘R’ logos.
Prices for the Golf R have yet to be announced, but lucky German buyers will be able to start placing their orders at the end of the year.
