Those crazy Volkswagen engineers have been spending their lunch breaks working on a new performance flagship for the Golf range. The concept version of the all-wheel drive Golf R 400 is boosted to 400PS, up from the standard R’s 300PS, and these sketches give us a flavour of what to expect when it’s officially revealed at the Auto China show in Beijing.
Alongside the power increase are big changes to the bodywork. Bigger bumpers, flared wheel-arches and larger wheels combine with a reworked interior to leave you in no doubt that this far from a standard R. The ‘Silver Flake’ metallic paint is contrasted with ‘Lemon Yellow’ highlights that also carry through to the horizontal stripe that runs across across the grille and into the bi-xenon headlights.
At this early stage the Golf R 400 is being described as ‘only a concept’ and there are no production plans but that hasn’t stopped Volkswagen from teasing us with a few performance stats. The DSG-equipped Golf R 400 will hit 62mph in under 4 seconds and top speed is 174 mph.
