Held over a gloriously sunny July weekend, the 2013 GTI International brought a huge variety of metal from the Volkswagen Audi group to the Shakespeare County Raceway near Stratford-upon-Avon.
Owners looking for an adrenaline hit could sign up for the Sprint Challenge. Held on the Raceway’s drag strip, it allowed drivers to line up head-to-head with one another to see who could record the fastest time over a quarter mile. The quickest competitor of the weekend was Paul Jordan who recorded 9.61 seconds in his 4WD Mk1 Scirocco. It may be an original Scirocco but it’s fitted with a very modern turbocharged 1.8-litre 20VT engine and with it Paul managed to beat last year’s record of 9.9 seconds.
The weekend attracted a fantastic mix of cars, with modern VAG motors lining up alongside classics from the 70s and 80s. At the same time you could find cars in original factory condition competing against some seriously modified motors. There were even a few imposters joining the queues to the drag strip, including a pair of Nissan GTRs, Lotus Exige and even a KTM X-Bow.
Meanwhile, the displays and show cars kept everything at a slower pace (more pictures here).
Thanks Ryan. No, I didn’t make any runs, tempting as it was. Don’t think my car would have set the timing boards alight!
Awesome pictures – thanks for sharing. Did you make any passes down the track?
