There’s more than a whiff of cheese about the script and acting in this video from Renault (enough to rival a slice of pungent Roquefort) but the subject of the video is much, much better than that. It’s the new limited edition Renaultsport Megane Red Bull Racing RB8, built to celebrate Renault’s continued success with the Red Bull Racing F1 team.
The Megane RB8 is only available in metallic Crépuscule Blue, the same shade that that you see on those championship winning F1 cars. The ‘F1 blade’ at the front is painted grey, as are the door handles, mirrors, rear spoiler and 19-inch alloys.
Wrapped around those alloys are a set of the same Bridgestone Potenze tyres that allowed the Megane 265 Trophy to break the record for the fastest lap of the Nordschliefe by a front-wheel drive production car.
There are a few Red Bull stickers on the boot and down the side, a sticker in the rear window celebrating the 2012 Constructors’ world title and a numbered plaque … and that’s about it. You’re basically getting a standard Megane 265 with the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine and wonderfully balanced chassis.
The UK will get just 30 examples of the RB8 so it’s going to be a rare spot in your local supermarket car park. In France prices have been set around 15% higher than a standard Megane 265 and that would put the Megane RB8 at around £29,000 here in the UK (yet to be confirmed). That may sound expensive but the Megane still reigns as one of, if not the, best handling hot hatches on the market.
