Customers who’ve pre-ordered the new Volkswagen Golf R may still be waiting to get their hands on their shiny new motor but that hasn’t stopped German tuning house ABT from getting hold of one and working on a tuning and styling package.
The new Golf R is hardly a slouch, with its 2.0-litre TFSI EA888 engine boasting 300PS and 380Nm when it leaves the Volkswagen factory. Give it to ABT and they’ll hand you back an R with an additional 70PS and 80Nm, enough to give the all-wheel drive Golf a 62mph time of 4.5 seconds (down from 4.7) and a top speed of 164mph (up from 155).
If the extra performance isn’t enough you can also go to town on the R’s visuals. ABT can offer a body-kit that includes a front grille, front spoiler with integrated blade, headlight brows, mirror caps, sill extensions, rear spoiler and rear skirt. A mixture of lacquered and matt surfaces are used. There’s also a set of dark ER-C wheels with blue trim to match the R’s trademark Lapiz Blue paint.
