I’ve got a lot of love for fast Volvos, particularly the ones that have been fettled by in-house tuners Polestar. So the prospect of a S60 saloon that’s been prepared by Polestar to join in the Swedish Elite Racing Series is something that makes me feel all happy inside.

Volvo S60 TTA

Saloon car roots of the Volvo S60 TTA are still recognisable

Keen to publicise their handiwork, Polestar have produced a brief video showing the Volvo S60 TTA tearing up the tarmac on the Nurburgring. Sadly it’s only a digital version of the car that’s been conjured up on a computer, intended to show off the racer’s Polestar Blue livery.

If the video is anything to go by the TTA remains faithful to the S60s curves. Despite the enormous wing, gaping air intakes, deep bumpers and massive wheel-arches you can still make out the handsome shape of Volvo’s saloon.

Like the V60 T6 I sampled earlier in the year, the S60 uses a V6 engine. Unlike the T6, the engine is mid-mounted and uses hybrid technology to extract over 400hp. The engine is mated to a sequential gearbox with steering column paddles, the body is made of carbon fibre and the chassis has been inspired by F1 technology.

Volvo S60 TTA Wind Tunnel

Wind tunnel testing has allowed Polestar to hone the S60's aerodynamics

The Elite Racing Series starts its 2012 campaign on 12th May and the Volvo Polestar Racing and Volvo Polestar Performance teams will each be campaigning with two S60 TTA race cars. The driver lineup includes Robert Dahlgren, Fredrik Ekblom and Thed Björk, with the fourth driver yet to be decided.
