To celebrate Kris Meeke’s recent success in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge, Peugeot are planning to release a special edition 207.
However, proving that Peugeot really don’t care about hot hatches any more the Meeke edition will most likely be based on the 1.4-litre engine that produces a paltry 74bhp.
Peugeot have already announced their intention to kill off the GTI badge and now, given the perfect opportunity to create a lightweight rally special, they have opted for an insurance-friendly model instead of a high-performance limited edition. Doubtless it will be based on a low spec and have some new alloys, a bit of extra bodykit and some ‘Meeke’ stickers thrown onto it.
Remember the limited edition Subaru Imprezas that celebrated Colin McRae’s and Richard Burns’ success? Or the brilliant Tommi Makinen edition of the Mitsubushi Evo? Peugeot obviously don’t, and from the people who used to make the lightweight ‘Rallye’ specials this really is a crying shame.
