This video from Volkswagen shows the Scirocco R on a track. Nothing unusual about that you may think, we’ve seen it before in the same colour with the familiar exhaust parp that results from the rapid-fire shifts of the twin-clutch DSG.

The thing is, the Scirocco R hasn’t been on sale since the end of 2013, not since the EA113 engine was declared too dirty for Europe. What makes this video stand out is that it was uploaded by Volkswagen yesterday, May 15th, nearly six months after the Scirocco R disappeared.

But we already knew it was coming back with the revised EA888. This is our first glimpse of the new Scirocco R on the move, bearing the same mid-life facelift as the rest of the range, and that means it won’t be long until it’s back on sale. Don’t worry if you can’t spot the differences as the changes are subtle, to say the least.

The R had been quietly dropped from the Scirocco range as its 2.0-litre turbocharged EA113 engine fell foul of new EU emissions regulations that came into effect at the start of 2014.
