With the cold, wet autumn weather looming on the horizon it’s time to start thinking about how much grip your tyres are going to offer on damp and slippery roads. With this in mind, TyreSafe have named October their Tyre Safety Month and are encouraging drivers to carry out a simple test to ensure they’ve got enough tread depth.
It really is a simple test – just get your hands on a 20p coin and stick it into the tread of your tyre. If you can see the outer band of the coin sitting above the tyre then you are dangerously close to the legal minimum of 1.6mm. While you’re legally OK up to 1.6mm, it’s worth bearing in mind that the wet-weather performance of a tyre really starts to drop off when the tread depth drops below 2mm.
Seeing as your tyres are the only thing that keep you on the road, perhaps it’s time to think of a new set before the worst of the weather arrives.
